Hello again friends!

I believe a good time was had by all at a fun and hard-hitting Wretched Tournament! The name proves itself accurate for those who made it to the grueling fourth set. Please congratulate our winners this year!

First Place: Jen and Mark M who had to take down the formidable Mark Stephens and Timothy Han!

Second Place: Barb and Bruce Davis who took down Tim W. and Greg Doyle, not an easy feat.

Third Place: Chris Hudson and John Borst pulled out a W over Holly and Dennis.

These win were hard earned and rewarded with tennis backpacks, customized Surfside Logo towels, water bottles, and new cans of tennis balls.

The event was followed by a well attended BBQ at Greg and Carol's place where triptip and Salmon were accompanied by a myriad of sides and one covered dessert, not to mention a little wine, beer and spirits!

Thanks to all of you who came out to watch, sub, and join the BBQ. What a great Surfside day.

2023 Summer Picnic

SUMMER PICNIC (LAST WEEKEND)

Let’s begin with an acknowledgment to Silvio for all the organizing and planning that  he put in to last week’s Surfside summer picnic.  It took a bit more effort this year due to the process of reserving the Bocce ball courts for our event.   We had over 20 people attend and many of them played bocce for the first time. We also had Maurice there to show us how to play pétanque, the French variation of bocce ball.  The weather was perfect and I would say all had a great time.  Thank you Silvio for all your hard work.  Also thanks to Jane and Ana for all their help.

2023 Spring Fling

Good Morning Surfside Tennis Club Members,

We were blessed with great tennis weather for the 2023 Spring Fling tournament.  There was no sun and no heavy winds.  Alison set a great tone for the day with her spring themed floral decorations and  prizes.  The gift drawings between the sets were a hit as well.  Welcome to the role of Tournament Director, Alison!

Lara did a fantastic job of organizing the players and getting everyone back onto the courts in a timely manner for the next rounds.   You ended your role as Tournament Director on a high note, Lara.

Silvio and I kept waiting for the call to go fill in for someone but the need never arrived.  I can’t remember the last time we did not have a last minute cancellation or someone dropping out after playing a few sets.

Everyone can thank John Bea for providing the tennis balls for the tournament.  It is much appreciated.

Thanks to Lara, Alison and Silvio for all the work in putting on this tournament.

RESULTS:

1st Place - Greg Burke

2nd Place - Mark Stephens

3rd Place - Ken Jorgensen

Raffle Winner - John Bea

Turkey Tussle 2022

Congratulations to Greg Burke, Greg Doyle, Barbara Babka and Choy Jung as prize winners at this year’s Turkey Tussle tournament!  Thanks to all that came out to play and I hope you had a good time (win or lose).  Please give us any feedback as to what you would like to see for future tournaments.  We try to make each one a little different and want to get as many members to come out to play as possible.  Remember, this is your tennis club and we appreciate your input to help make this fun for everyone.

I can't thank Lara enough for all her time and effort in arranging the matchups, creating the format, recruiting the players, organizing the prizes, drawing up the chart for the tournament, changing the matchups as needed during play, keeping score and most importantly - bringing her upbeat enthusiasm and sense of humor to the courts to host the event - it really helps set the tone for a great day.  Her work is greatly appreciated by all of us.

Here is the email sent by Lara to the participants of last weeks’s Turkey Tussle Tournament:

From Lara Henry:

I wanted to say thank you for playing in yesterdays Turkey Tussle, and I hope you had as much fun as I did! The tennis was fierce with a competitive line up. There were some unexpected upsets, and some real nail biters! The middle set left most of us watching court 6 battle it out through a 7-5 tie break.

In this format, points were earned for each game with the winner taking a spread of the differential. Congratulations to our top three scores and prize winners:

1) Greg Burke with 31 points

2) Greg Doyle with  29 points

3) Barbara Babka with 28 points

Also, congrats to the winner of our choice prize, a frozen turkey, which was awarded to Choy Jung!

This was a brand new format to make the tournament more competitive based on feedback we've received. Admittedly, there was a glitch or two, but we will iron out the kinks for next time.

Meanwhile, I welcome your feedback! Did you like the format or not, and what changes would you like to see for next year? Please email me with your suggestions!

Thanks also to the board members who help a LOT with collecting prizes, measuring the nets, helping hang signs, offering to substitute, etc. It's a team effort and I couldn't do it without them.

Hope to see you ALL at the holiday party December 4th!

Wretched Tournament 2022

Hello again my Surfside Friends!

A huge thank you to all who participated in the Wretched Tournament this weekend! It was another FANTASTIC morning of tennis and friendship.

As a quick recap, the weather was just perfect - cloud covering for the first sets, with a gentle breeze kicking up as the sun started to break through later in the morning. We were greeted with scrumptious homemade banana cinnamon muffins, courtesy of Bonne Werring. Silvio then arrived with ice-cold sparkling water flavored with fresh fruit to keep us refreshed during the four-set battle.

All courts were full of smiling happy hitters who fought through three full sets until the last six teams pressed on to the finals. I know there were many tie breaks along the way and our top court in the finals battled it out to a 4/4 set with a 7-5 tie break win!

AND YOUR WINNERS ARE.....

Third circuit winners - Lori Martin and Rose Bodrian

Lori and Rose each took home a bottle of Talley wine

Second circuit winners - Bruce and Barbara Davis

Bruce and Barbars took home a bottle of Talley Pinot Noir and a gift certificate to Beerwood in Los Osos

And our First Circuit winners are - Aryn and Ken Jorgensen

Aryn and Ken are proving to be the team to beat! They walked away with a $50 gift cert to Hidden Kitchen and a $25 gift cert to Le Parisienne

There were also two surprise scratch off winners; the lucky draw went to:

Dennis Bailey went home with a fun package of tennis shaped pasta, yum

Aryn Jorgensen went home with a coffee mug that says "Filled with the Tears of People I Beat at Tennis". Very apropos!

All players went away with a large gourmet chocolate bar each!

A good time was had by all, smiles and laughter were exchanged with friends new and old. BUT, the party didn't stop there as players and guests were hosted to a post-tournament barbeque at the home of Greg Doyle. Grilled tritip, chicken breast and garlic bread were quickly devoured by the hungry crew! Conversation and drinks carried into the afternoon.

Special shout outs to: Keith Crowfoot, Silvio Desantis, Morri Nash, Bonnie Werring and Greg Doyle for helping elevate this event to another level!

For those who couldn't join us, I look forward to seeing you at the Turkey Tussle in November! Look for registration announcements next month.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2022 WRETCHED TOURNAMENT WINNERS!

Spring Fling 2022

Surfsiders,

A huge thank you to all who came out to participate in or cheer-on the Spring Fling Tournament this past Saturday! A good time was certainly had by all, lots of smiles and laughs, great weather and some strong competition! I especially appreciate the good humor shared by those who didn’t have their best day out there, next time perhaps there should be a bogie award, I’ll talk to my people.

Meanwhile - drum roll please…. here are your winners!

Congratulations to our top three scorers:

First Place: Brian O’Farrell – this was Brian’s first day as a member of Surfside and he took the “W”!

Second Place: John Bea – another somewhat new member who helped John Howard demolish my partner and I in the fourth set, so a prize was well earned!

Third Place: John Engvall – John recruited Brian O’Farrell, otherwise he may have been in 2nd place! J

Also, a shout out to Keith Crowfoot, Silvio Desantis, Choy Jung and Carl Pherson who showed up to help in many ways – collecting the prizes, getting the courts ready, charting scores and being available to substitute if needed. It’s always a team effort, thank you gentlemen!

I’m so grateful to be part of such a fun and collaborative group of people – hope to see you on a Saturday soon.

Turkey Tussle 2021

Hello Surfside Tennis Club Members,

It was a challenging day on the courts due to the relentless winds, yet all that signed up for the annual Turkey Tussle tournament showed up and played.   It wasn’t always pretty, there were numerous shots that stayed in that should have gone out and many that just blew off the court.   It is humbling (and embarrassing) to swing at a ball and feel nothing but air blowing through your strings, something I experienced a few times myself that day.  I applaud everyone for playing in these demanding conditions and I hope that all of you had a fun time.

Here are the results from a field of 18 players (with 5 substitutes taking turns filling in to bring us to a full 5 courts of doubles).

1st Place with 24 wins - Colt Wilkinson

2nd Place with 23 wins - Mark Stephens

3rd Place with 23 wins - Greg Burke

Second and third place finish was determined by tie-breaker (spinning of the racquet)

4th Place with 20 wins - Shoni Swenson

Fourth place was also determined by tie-breaker (spinning of the racquet) with Lori Martin who also had 20 wins.

Colt, Mark, and Greg each received a $25.00 gift card.  Shoni left with the frozen turkey.

Special thanks to Coach Taylor Bennett and MBHS for reserving the courts for our tournament.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Keith

Wretched Tournament 2021

Hello Surfside Tennis Club Members,

The calm, gray, overcast morning for our 2021 Wretched Tournament was perfect tennis weather for the 24 Surfside contestants that came out to compete on the courts at MBHS.  Our tournament director, Lara Henry, provided the starting lineup as seen above.

It seems that every year this creative but somewhat confusing bracket chart raises the usual questions and remarks about the order of play.  Nevertheless, once the players finished studying and deciphering the chart, they removed their 3D glasses, put their compasses and sextants away and play began.

There were 3 rounds of our normal no-ad 8 game sets.  The six teams that made it into the finals played a regular scoring fourth set.

Throughout the matches I observed the varying tactics employed by the players to overwhelm their opponents.  Everything from drop shots, high lobbing moon balls, passing shots, and overhead smashes were attempted.  There were long suspenseful rallies that were fun to watch as the players patiently returned shots and waited for their chance to hit a winner or for the other team to make a mistake.  It was great to see everyone having fun even as they were playing competitive tennis.  Laughter and “Good Shot!” was heard often from the courts.

After the final shot of the final match was completed, we had our winners!  Congratulations to the following teams for their achievement.

Aryn and Ken Jorgensen

Kathy Dannecker & Concho Crotzer

Morri Nash and Dennis Bailey

For their efforts players each received a $15.00 gift certificate from local Morro Bay merchants.

I want to thank everyone that came out to play for contributing to the success of this tournament.  The general tone of the day was that of good fun and sportsmanship.  That can only be attained by the positive attitudes and personalities of the participants.  I am happy that Surfside Tennis has members with these qualities.

I want to also thank MBHS tennis coach Taylor Bennett for reserving the courts for us to use.  Taylor has been having a very busy tennis season and we appreciate her taking the time and helping us out.

Lara Henry did a wonderful job in organizing the tournament and keeping things moving smoothly, even as she was playing in the event.  A special thanks to you, Lara!

Photos from the tournament have been uploaded to the website and can be seen here:  Wretched Tournament 2021 Photos

See you on the courts!
